Antique German Pewter Lidded Beer Stein circa late 1800s by Villeroy & Bach, Mettlach, Germany. This stein features a pewter hinged lid, and three pottery transfer panels for the design, one depicting a statue in Bavaria, the second depicting the Munich Child sipping a stein and says "Gruss aus Munchen" (Greetings from Munich), and the third panel depicting the Kgl. Hofbrauhaus , the historic royal bavarian brew house. The stein is in excellent condition, no chips or scratches whatsoever to the pottery, which is stamped and marked on the bottom. This design is Mettlach 1526 and is the half-liter volume. Created as the coat-of-arms or archival seal of Munich in 1239, the centrally depicted Munchner Kindl (Munich Child) has evolved from a hooded monk standing in front of Munich's gate to a charming child and symbol of the city. The Bavaria statue and the Hofbrauhaus, two famous Munich landmarks, are pictured on the sides of the stein.
